what is the difference between training and coaching?

Training is a process in which trainees acquire knowledge and new skills through being 'taught' or 'trained' by an expert in their field. A trainer does not always consider the uniqueness of peoples' existing skills, nor their motivation or commitment. Training does not usually result in radical shifts in people's thinking and actions. In contrast to this coaching is a non-directive method which enables people to maximise their performance. This is achieved by helping a coachee explore or brainstorm situations, identify options, set goals and agree on action plans. The coachee alone has full responsibility for the changes he or she is making.

when and why do you use coaching to support learning?

Coaching, paired with training has dramatic results: according to research carried out by the International Personnel Management Association, when training was combined with coaching, individual productivity increased by an astounding 88%, compared to training alone, which increased productivity only by 22%! 

Many very advanced non-native speakers of English who appear ‘fluent’ in English, many have reached their individual 'linguistic glass ceiling' and may find that this impacts their performance levels. Whilst a specialised language or communication/cultural skills course alone can often not break through this 'glass ceiling', an integrated coaching element or a sometimes completely independent coaching module will!

Coaching provides the ideal vehicle for learning and improving your communication or behaviour in a different business culture - it takes over where traditional training courses leave off. Coaching reinforces learning goals and enables individuals to make the leap from learning to action and, as a result, adds real value to the training investment!

Are programmes are always tailored and due to their effectiveness, often surprisingly short.
