communication skills

The dictionary defines communication as a process in which we give (thoughts, feelings, ideas or information) successfully to others through speech, writing, bodily movements or signals.
Skill is defined as a learned ability of doing something competently.

"The trouble with her is that she lacks the power of conversation but not the power of speech." - George Bernard Shaw

Successful communication in business is about more than just words! Utilising the ‘power of effective communication’, leads to healthier interactions and increased performance.

Most of us communicate adequately and can therefore take communication skills for granted. However, lacking the ability to communicate effectively in stressful or difficult situations may lead to poor performance, stress, and low motivation.

Developing both verbal and non verbal communication skills, such as  body language and appropriate behaviours, helps people establish better relationships and become much more effective in the work environment.

Unlike other "off-the-shelf" training courses, uwk offers tailor-made training and coaching programmes that are geared to the individual.

By tailoring each programme to you and your specific needs, and by using a holistic approach for every programme, we can offer you an exceptionally high level of personalised training.

We can both train and coach you to…

  • communicate ideas more clearly

  • present in front of others with confidence

  • write more clearly, effectively and make an impact on those you want to impress

  • develop effective listening techniques in order to help build rapport

  • recognise how your perceptions and behaviour affect others

  • be more assertive  and gain confidence

  • influence and negotiate successfully

communication skills and cultural awareness

English and non-native English speakers working in an international environment are increasingly realising the need for a diversity of skills when liaising with professionals from different cultures. Adequate linguistic skills are not enough; effective communication requires much greater cultural understanding.

Highly skilled professionals for whom English is a foreign language are usually in their positions because they have the skills to do the job. Unfortunately the effectiveness of their performance may be limited by a gap in their cultural and linguistic competence. These cultural and linguistic barriers, which non-native English speakers may experience, can often hinder successful communication.

uwk targets language and cultural communication skills most effectively through tailor-made one-to-one training programmes which are coupled with a coaching module

In addition to the above mentioned skills, uwk will enhance your awareness and performance in;

  • cultural communication styles which can make people appear either too passive or too aggressive. This prevents them from becoming successful team players.

  • voice projection, to emphasise the verbal message in presentations and add clarity to the delivery of a presentation

  • pronunciation and accents, to make individuals easier to understand

  • vocabulary, to encourage individuals to contribute fully and more confidently

The key to all our tailor-made programmes for prospective delegates is an initial assessment plus a detailed needs analysis.
